identity.org.au

identity.org.au is not an Australian Government service. It is an open-source community service stewarded by the not-for-profit DETIO Foundation, currently in the process of applying for accreditation under the Digital ID Act 2024. How this service is different

For individuals

Your identity, working for you — not filed in someone's database

Every time you photograph your licence for a website, you create another copy that can leak. The wallet replaces copies with answers.

What changes for you

The old way of proving identity compared with the wallet
Today's way With the wallet
Upload your licence to every website that asks Verify once; reuse the result everywhere the wallet is accepted
The venue photocopies your ID — name, address, everything The venue gets one answer: “over 18 — yes”
You never know who still holds copies of your documents Your consent history lists every share; every consent is revocable
A breach at any company that copied your ID exposes you Services hold answers, not documents — there is nothing to steal
Deleting your data means emailing dozens of companies One deletion process, with a published timeline and key destruction

The rights behind the promises

These are not features that can be quietly removed — they are commitments in the published documents that govern the system:

  • Consent, always and granularly

Per data category, per service, with optional expiry — and revocable at any time.

  • Biometrics never monetised

Selling, leasing or trading biometric data is prohibited outright — regardless of consent.

  • Access and portability

Request a copy of your data at any time; responses within 30 days.

  • Real deletion

30 days from request, plus backup rotation — with encryption keys destroyed.

Where to go next

Is this a government ID?

No. This is an open-source community service stewarded by a not-for-profit foundation — not a government service, and it does not replace your passport or licence. How it differs.
